In the midst of political discussions surrounding our involvement in Iraq it's sometimes too easy to forget what's going on there and the individual acts of courage that surely take place every day.
NBC's Richard Engel has been doing amazing reporting from Baghdad (at enormous personal cost, including the loss of his marriage, friends, and some health issues) and he posts, with permission, an email from a Lt. Colonel to his wife detailing one such example of courage. Set aside your politics for a minute and read what these guys are going through over there.
One of the hardest things we had to do was lift SSG Maupin's broken and bleeding body into the Bradley. Every time we moved him had to be excruciatingly painful, but we knew we had to do it to save his life.... I will never forget his screams.
