Pace out as Joint Chiefs Chair
Earlier today, Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced Pace was out as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. And Navy Admiral Mike Mullen is in. This is a typical Rovian maneuver to bury important news - quietly announce it on a Friday afternoon, when everyone is already focused on the weekend. And really, aren't we all just working for the weekend?
Mullen has said that he views this war as a "generational war." Senator Christopher Dodd (D-CT) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) have chimed in already that they will be very wary of a nominee who will be focused more on a "generational war" than on bringing the troops home.
The fact that General Pace said recently that he believes "homosexual acts between two individuals are immoral" may be part of the reason he won't be renominated, but it's also Gates cleaning house of Rumsfeldians. And the fact that while consulting with the Senate, it became clear Pace would have a contentious renomination hearing.
