Gonzales Resigns
Yes, Big Alberto has finally turned in his paperwork.
"It has been one of my greatest privileges to lead the Department of Justice," Gonzales said at a news conference, announcing his resignation effective Sept. 17.
I am actually surprised the resignation was timed to coincide with the congressional recess, which would have allowed Bush a recess appointment that wasn't reliant on confirmation. Is this a sign of the weakened political thinking without Karl Rove? The old boy isn't even done packing his office and the joint's already falling down?
Bush was reportedly "very reluctant" to accept Big Alberto's resignation, and with good reason. Who else will be as pliable and blindly loyal to the administration's unconstitutional schemes? Who else would put his personal friendship with the president over his duties as a public servant and top cop? I can't wait to see who Bush thinks that person might be.
UPDATE: Bush's announcement now available:

I read somewhere last week that Bush might move Chertoff into the position. As opposed to Fredo, he apparently has some experience working in a U.S. attorney office.
But we won't see a Justice Department cleaning its act up and crawling out of the sewer until we see a Democrat in the executive branch.
