Rove Resigns: Blogosphere Crashes

If you notice the Internet running a bit slower today you can bet it's due to the shitstorm of activity in the blogosphere kicked up by Karl Rove's announcement that he is resigning from the Bush administration effective August 31. But if you think this day of reckoning is a sign that we may be finally seeing the end of this most awful Bush/Cheney/Rove era, think again. Rove has said that he timed this announcement so as to leave on his own terms and not allow the lefty bloggers any credit for his resignation. I think the pending Presidential election and results from this weekend's non-binding Iowa straw poll have something to do with it too. Me thinks Rove is about to fatten his wallet with some Romney cash, leaving poor old John McCain even further in the woods.

With most everyone in the mainstream media hailing Rove as a "Boy Genius" and political mastermind, the Washington Post’s Dan Froomkin points out the obvious: “After years of being lauded as a political genius, Rove nevertheless leaves his party in worse shape than he found it, with his boss profoundly discredited in the eyes of the American people.”

Best and brightest of the Republican party, eh...?

Andrew Sullivan adds to the Rove bashing (from the conservative side): “Rove is one of the worst political strategists in recent times. He took a chance to realign the country and to unite it in a war - and threw it away in a binge of hate-filled niche campaigning, polarization and short-term expediency.”

Turd blossom.

The money quote, "There's always something that can keep you here, and as much as I'd like to be here, I've got to do this for the sake of my family,"

So, did Rove just play Bush for as long as Bush was useful to Rove's brilliant career? What's he going to ruin next?
