Rudy: Out

NBC News is reporting that Rudy Giuliani is dropping out of the race and will endorse John McCain on Wednesday. It seems that Rudy's plan to put all his eggs in Florida was as big a stinker as most people thought it would be.

That leaves McCain, Romney, and Huckabee. The longer Huck stays in, the better it is for McCain. Huck siphons away evangelical votes from Romney and with Fred and Rudy out of the way, that leaves McCain to pick up the rest. But ole Mitt has a gang of cash so I expect this to be long and ugly.

Rudy's gamble did not pay off. The appeal of his Florida strategy is hard to deny: Rudy was most conservative's second choice (and has greater crossover appeal than McCain), but not showing up for the fight cost him big.
