William F. Buckley Dead at 82
Conservatism ain't what it used to be, and now one of the champions of what is now being called "paleo-conservatism" is dead at the age of 82.
William F. Buckley Jr. was a firebrand and a little bit creepy but he was also funny as hell in an old man, Ivy League way. According to his Wikipedia entry in an argument with liberal gadfly, Gore Vidal, Buckley said, "Now listen, you queer, stop calling me a crypto-Nazi or I will sock you in your goddamn face, and you will stay plastered." That's good stuff.
His assistant Linda Bridges said Buckley was found dead by his cook at his home in Stamford, Conn. The cause of death was unknown, but he had been ill with emphysema, she said.
