Romney as Veep?

This is either a weather balloon or a decoy:

Romney Tops McCain's VP List

Regardless of what McCain says, you aboslutely pick a running mate based on what he can bring to the campaign. No sense focusing on how he might perform as VP if you can't win.

So, this leak is either a way for the campaign to test the reaction among the base or it's a total decoy to give McCain room to vet his real top pick. Romney is a lightening rod and people love him or hate him...mostly they hate him. He strikes most people (and pundits) as an arrogant robot, but that didn't stop Dick Cheney from winning the second seat.

What does he add?

  • Money: Dude can raise cash but McCain opted into federal financing so who cares?
  • Michigan: Family ties put the swing state into play and he did well there in the primary.
  • Youth: McCain is dogged by the focus on his old age. A youthful VP (but not too youthful, sorry Bobby Jindal) could mitigate that a bit.

All in all, that doesn't look so great. Neither of those two boobs can outshine Obama's star power and the general vibe around Romney is that he's a faker, which doesn't help McCain much with those social conservatives who just don't trust him. I gotta think this is more of a decoy than anything else.

Cheney didn't really "Win" the VP nod - he was in charge of the committee to select a VP and, well, he chose himself. So, perhaps we should look at who is heading up the VP selection process in the McCain camp...

    Splitting hairs, Jude...

It appears that it’s all down to Alaska Gov Sarah Palin or Mitt Romney, and team Romney fears Palin now has the best shot, so Romney camp is mounting a blogosphere-wide assault via Politico.

The tip-off that Politico is just a “promote Romney” piece is that it mentions EVERY NAME in the next two tiers of Veep prospects EXCEPT SARAH PALIN!!! — even names far more unlikely than Palin (since Romney camp knows Palin is the ONLY ONE who tops — I’ll say tops by far — Romney as McCain’s best pick).

Bottom line, Romney and Politico fear Palin most — as do the Dems and the MSM. (By the way, the Dems and MSM do not fear Romney the most — which says a lot.)

AOL, a main on-line pro-Obama/pro-Dem player, is now carrying the Politico piece promoting Romney buzz.

Clearly AOL wants McCain and the GOP to lose the general elction — hence they gladly promote Romney (no mention of Palin).

Also, CNN had Romney — kind of out of the blue — attacking Obama. Again, CNN, wanting McCain and the GOP to lose, gladly promotes Romney (to attempt to avert the Palin threat).

All the media frenzy which will surround the remarkable Palin “story” — essentially free to McCain — will be worth millions and millions of dollars of coverage and PR (more money than Romney would provide anyway).

    Ted,

If Gov. Palin is high on the list, do you think it is an attempt to win over Hillary supporters who feel let down? (There is a certain stripe of feminist who would do anything just to see a woman on the ticket, all other issues be damned.) Or is more going on there? I don't know much about AK politics, but I would imagine one couldn't become governor without the blessings of the oil industry up there. Perhaps her candidacy would be a plus for those who think the solution to $140+/bbl oil is drilling in ANWR.

    Thoughts???

Yes, Palin obviously attracts the disenfranchised female Hillary voters PLUS she more than dovetails with the oil/energy/drilling situation. And more than that, her libertarian bent will attract Bob Barr voters.
