The Republican candidate for Vice President, Caribou Barbie, tried once again to discredit Barack Obama by suggesting that Obama has ties to known terrorists, CNN reported today. Speaking at an event in Colorado, she said that, "This is not a man who sees America as you and I do: as the greatest force for good in the world... This is someone who sees America as imperfect enough to pal around with terrorists who targeted their own country."
In one sense, Caribou Barbie has a point; Obama's views of America are different from her own (to the extent that she has actually articulated any views at all), hence their appearance on opposing presidential tickets. I sure the hell don't view America the way she does. While I agree that America can be a tremendous force for good, if that force isn't employed properly America can be disruptive and destructive, perhaps despite the noblest intentions. I hope she doesn't think America is perfect.
However, the charge that Obama "pals around" with terrorists has been debunked by a multitude of news outlets, including the very conservative National Review. Barbie alluded to the fact that over the last decade or so, Obama has met one Willie Ayers on a handful of occasions such as charity board meetings and other local community-related events as by chance they happen to live in the same Chicago neighborhood. Ayers had been accused of conspiring to detonate bombs and start riots, but the charges were later dropped. So according to Barbie, occasionally meeting someone in the neighborhood equals "paling around." I wonder if that is a product of living in Alaska, where people in remote areas might not see another person for a month or so – if one comes into contact with relatively few people over long periods of time, "pal" might take on a whole new definition.
At any rate, by many accounts the McCain campaign appears to be entering a sort of panic mode. With a mere month to go until the election, most polls show Obama gaining voters' support. The accusation that Obama pals around with terrorists is relatively mild compared to the ugly attacks that John Kerry, the 2004 Democratic presidential candidate, endured by the likes of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. I would bet that attacks on Obama from the Republicans will start to come at a fast and furious pace as the McCain campaign begins to circle the drain. Just don't expect them to be factually accurate.
Speaking of associating with people who take a dim view of America, perhaps Caribou Barbie should remember her relationship with a certain avowed Alaska secessionist. By relationship, I mean spouse.
