Who's In Charge Around Here?

Who's running the McCain campaign? Is it John McCain? Is it Sarah Palin? Is it Karl Rove? Is it some cyborg McCain impersonator?

Here's what John McCain said a few months ago when surrogates tried to use Obama's association with his pastor against him:

"I'm making it very clear, as I have a couple of times in the past, that there's no place for that kind of campaigning, and the American people don't want it."

Here's Sarah Palin this weekend:
"I don't know why [the Wright] association isn't discussed more, because those were appalling things that that pastor had said about our great country."

She continued, "To me, that does say something about character. But, you know, I guess that would be a John McCain call on whether he wants to bring that up."

So, is there room in the campaign now for this sort of thing or is Sarah Palin some kind of loose cannon beyond the control of John McCain--you know, the guy running for president of the United States?

I haven't seen a campaign go off the rails like this since LBJ ran another Arizona senator into the ditch. Talk about unfocused-has he been hanging around with Todd Rundgren, by any chance?
