Sullivan: Why Palin Matters

Andrew Sullivan on why he won't "drop it already" on his Palin coverage:

Let's be real in a way the national media seems incapable of: this person should never have been placed on a national ticket in a mature democracy. She was incapable of running a town in Alaska competently. The impulsive, unvetted selection of a total unknown, with no knowledge of or interest in the wider world, as a replacement president remains one of the most disturbing events in modern American history. That the press felt required to maintain a facade of normalcy for two months - and not to declare the whole thing a farce from start to finish - is a sign of their total loss of nerve. That the Palin absurdity should follow the two-term presidency of another individual utterly out of his depth in national government is particularly troubling. 46 percent of Americans voted for the possibility of this blank slate as president because she somehow echoed their own sense of religious or cultural "identity". Until we figure out how this happened, we will not be able to prevent it from happening again. And we have to find a way to prevent this from recurring.

I've always said that there's plenty of room for debate with principled conservatives. McCain's pick of Palin (in the wake of eight years of Bush-Rove) completely undermined the idea that American conservatives have anything serious to offer to that debate. Sullivan wants to repair that damage...somehow.

Palin-ness is the whatness of all-Palin.

I think Missy Piggy would have been a better VP for Senator John McCain...

Sarah Palin had been concentrating on State & local issues until a month before the debate with Joe Biden. Biden had been debating federal issues for 35 years. He was reputed to be the Democrats' most experienced, knowledgeable Presidential candidate, the guy with "gravitas" (which is why Obama picked him for veep). So Biden should have been able to crush Palin like a bug. Instead, she at least held her own, and she actually made fewer factual errors than Biden did. Conclusion: she is a very quick study, and clearly a lot smarter than Biden.

Maybe that's part of why the Left hates Sarah Palin so much. She combines old-fashioned Christian values (which the Left detests) with high-caliber intellect (which the Left fears).

She was a perfect choice for the understudy / apprenticeship role which is the vice-presidency!

Dave

Gotta love the Dave Burtons of the world, tilting at their imaginary "Left" windmills.

Keep dreaming, Dave!

Man, Dave,

(Assuming you post wasn't an exercise in irony/sarcasm...)

I absolutely LOVE folks like you these days. Please, please, pledge you unyielding support to Cribou Barbie.

So, you think that the fact that Barbie didn't run screaming from the podium with shit streaming down her legs at the debate qualifies as some sort of victory? In one sense, I suppose you're right in that she exceeded expectations simply by showing up. Well done!

The debate was basically a job interview with the American people. Imagine going into an interview and saying to the interviewer, "Ask me anything you want, but I just might not give you the answer you're looking for." - Do you really think you'll get the job?

When she did provide "answers," they were usually just catch-phrases surrournded by gibberish. She speaks in run-on sentences (if one can call them that), so I suppose the idea is that if she spews out enough words, some of them might make sense.

What, specifically, other than her apparent love of fetuses and speaking in tongues qualifies her as "Christian?" - Her love of designer clothing? - Her moose slaying acumen? - Her disdain for 1) everybody living on the East Coast, 2) Everybody living on the West Coast, 3) San Francisco, 4) San Francisco agian (for good measure), and 5) "community organizers," by which she really meant black people in urban areas?

"High-caliber intellect?" - Now that's comedy gold!

I can tell you with absolute certainty that Caribou Barbie's place on the ticket cost McCain votes - I know people who switched when they found out what an insult she was.

Please, please, make Caribou Barbie your candidate in 2012!

She obviously was not a good choice and not ready for the big time. I have previously defended her, but I was wrong...she was very inexperienced to be put in the position she was in.

McCain should have picked Romney.

I am amazed though, at the amount of sexist insults that were thrown at her by the left.

Certainly go ahead disagree with her on whatever issue you have with her...
(abortion though was the real reason she was so hated by so called "feminists") but to insult the woman in a sexist manner exposes some of the bullshit hypocrisy on the left. If she said any of the dumb shit Biden says on a daily basis, the left would be exploding with laughter. "Oh thats just Joe...haha, he just mispoke"....I'm not a very big fan of Biden, I think he talks out of his ass a little bit too much)

I don't agree with the woman on many things, but I do applaud how a mother of 5 rose up in the political scene in a "man-state" like Alaska. That in itself is impressive...she's just not ready to be VP. She will not be the nominee in 2012. There's no way. She's done at least nationally

She should go back to Alaska and remain governor or maybe become a senator or get her own TV show on Fox.

Now, Tim,

"If she said any of the dumb shit Biden says on a daily basis, the left would be exploding with laughter." - She does and the Left does.

Note that her whopping 8-minute (including a whole 3+ minuts for Q&A) press conference at today's RGA meeting in Florida was cut short - by the Republicans. She's a disaster. There's a reason why even the Republican Party wants to muzzle her.

There's a difference between misspeaking, as Biden often does (to quite comical ends) and not being able to articulate a complex thought or idea. The former is akin to a typo, the latter is akin to not understanding the subject at hand.

Absolutely nothing Caribou Barbie has ever said leads me to believe that she has a firm grip on anything other than her own self-righteousness.

I can't speak for all of Caribou Barbie's critics, and certainly some have levied some sexist charges at her, perhaps hypocritially in some instances, but I found her absolutely insulting, condescending, arrogant, and abrasive from square one. She deserves every bit of criticism she gets.

Speaking for myself, my problems with her have nothing to do with her being a woman. I don't care if she has 10 kids with down-syndrome (sp?). My problems with her have everything to do with her being a willfully ignorant self-important fool.

In her acceptance speech, she basically told half of America, myself included, to go fuck ourselves. Could you imagine what would have happened if Biden or Obama, during their speeches, said something like, "You know, I'm not one of those rural farm-town simple-folk... I'm not from Texas or Appalachia..." We'd be talking about President-Elect McCain right now.

The Right has its own special breed of arrogance - quite literally a holier-than-thou / more-American-than-thou attitude. This time, they over-played their hand.

Jude, don't you think exclusively referring to Palin as "Caribou Barbie" has some sexist overtones?

Tim

One more thing:

Conservatives love to push the idea that the goodly members of their ranks "make it" on their own. She didn't "rise up" by herself. She had the power of the national Republican Party behind her run for the mayorship of Wasilla. She had tremendous party machinery behind her that the other candidates didn't have. Prior to her run, the mayor of Wasilla was a non-partisan job. In that campaign, she billed herself as the first Christian candidate. (Never mind that all the other candiates were Christians too.)

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see her on FOX some day soon. Or maybe CBN. Is TNN still around?

Jake,

I actually gave a lot of thought as to how to address Her Mooseness. At first, I toyed with Gov. Palin, and Mrs. Palin, but as the insult of her candidacy bore deeper and deeper, I decided that an insult must me met with an insult. Juvenile, perhaps, but fun and I feel better.

As far as "Caribou Barbie" as a moniker goes: 1) She was, in fact, a beauty queen; and 2) She does, in fact, like to kill caribou. Those qualities are not unjustly ascribed to her. Thus, the moniker is apt. Nobody screams "sexism" at the mention of Joe the Plumber, as if only men can be plumbers.

Then there's my pet theory, a "caribouspiracy" if you will; that Barbie was selected for McCain elements within the Republican Party in a deliberate attempt to derail McCain's chances of winning.

As a self annointed spokesperson for the "left," I must say that Sarah Palin's refusal to leave the stage gracefully is a source of infinite joy. If the governor represents the future of the Republican party, their time in the wilderness will last that much longer. At least Palin can bring along her hunting skills.

You foolish people: your moronic minds have not one per cent of the intelligence and lesser amounts of the wisdom and grace possessed by Govenor Sarah Palin.

@ Constitution,

Thanks for the thoughtful insight there. You sure showed us. Be sure to stop by often and show off your scintillating intellect.

Oh, and "percent" is one word.
